Lysistrata: A Woman's Translation
Sound Design & Composition
September 2025
Pittsburgh Playhouse
The women of Greece have had enough. With daring humor, Aristophanes’ classic comedy follows the fearless Lysistrata as she leads a rebellion like no other, proving that love, laughter and a little rebellion can change the world.
Lysistrata's sound design and composition explored the physicality of sound effects and how they create sonic "bodies" by collaborating with props to produce a set of sound toys actors could explore and play with. Actors and puppets had swordfights using phalluses with squeakers inside, showed excitement and disappointment using ascending and descending slide whistles, and groaned and moaned with rubber chickens. Lysistrata's music further incorporated these sound toys using techniques inspired by musique concréte: making our sound toys the instruments themselves. Lysistrata explored sex and intimacy through rhythm, beat, physicality, buffoonery, and comically sexy sound effects and music.
